Traditionally, research has been the Achilles’ heel of Latin American business schools when compared to their counterparts in other regions of the world. Due to some specific features of the Latin American context and their origin as teaching institutions, the local business schools had difficulty producing good-quality and impactful research. However, in recent years, significant progress has been made in identifying the critical factors that hindered the development and production of international-quality research in the region, and now there are many examples of how institutions can successfully address and overcome these issues.
Tradicionalmente, la investigación ha sido el talón de Aquiles de las escuelas de negocios latinoamericanas en comparación con sus homólogas de otras regiones del mundo. Debido a algunas características específicas del contexto latinoamericano y a su origen como instituciones de enseñanza, las escuelas de negocios locales han tenido dificultades para producir investigación de buena calidad e impacto. Sin embargo, en los últimos años se han logrado avances significativos en la identificación de los factores críticos que obstaculizaron el desarrollo y la producción de investigación de calidad internacional en la región, y ahora hay muchos ejemplos de cómo las instituciones pueden abordar y superar estos problemas con éxito.
This workshop will focus on the importance of having a faculty strategy consistent with the institutional mission and vision, the implementation of best practices in recruiting and managing the faculty body, and the critical factors that lead to high-quality and impactful research at the business schools.
Este taller se centrará en la importancia de tener una estrategia para el cuerpo de profesores consistente con la misión y visión institucional, la implementación de mejores prácticas en la selección y gestión del cuerpo académico y los factores críticos a tener en cuenta para lograr una investigación de alta calidad e impacto en las escuelas de negocios.

Latin America and the Caribbean.
Before joining AMBA & BGA, Carlos held academic and administrative positions at business schools in France, Germany and Belgium and undertook several educational projects in the UK. In addition, he accomplished assignments related to postgraduate management education in Japan, Morocco and Argentina. For many years, he took part in projects of the European Union for the development of business education in the Caribbean.

Gustavo Vulcano is Professor of Operations Management and Academic Dean at the School of Business at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (UTDT) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His research areas include revenue and pricing analytics, and retail operations. His research was published in premier journals including Management Science, Operations Research, and Manufacturing and Service Operations Management.
Gustavo obtained his PhD in Decision, Risk and Operations from the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University (USA), in 2003. Before joining UTDT, he was full-time faculty at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University (USA), where he obtained his tenure in 2012. He is currently adjunct professor at NYU, teaching courses for the MBA and the Master of Science in Business Analytics.
